14. When the Church tells you that Mary
was the co-redeemer of mankind, and the
Bible tells you that you are lessening the work that Christ did on the
cross, in whom do you put your trust?
The Church does not officially teach that Mary is the
co-redeemer of mankind, but that she participated in it by saying
"yes" to God and giving birth to the Savior. The Church's devotion
to Mary is intrinsic to Christian worship and consistent with her
own self-understanding when she said, "all generations will call me
blessed." (Lk 1:48b) Mary is inseparable from Christ because she was
his mother and certainly participated in the sacrifice on the cross
by watching the Son she so loved die in agony. In this we place our
trust in Jesus. |
