11. When the Church tells you its OK to
make graven images, statues, and idols
and proudly display them in your churches and homes, and when God commanded
you to not do so, in whom do you put your trust?
Indeed, representations of God by the hand of man are
forbidden. Nevertheless, God allowed for the making of images
that pointed symbolically toward salvation, so it was with the
bronze serpent, the ark of the covenant, and the cherubim. (Num
21:4-9; Wis 16:5-14; Jn 3:14-15; Ex 25:10-22; 1 Kings 6:23-28;
7:23-26). The Church teaches that the veneration of images
is not contrary to the first commandment because it is the person
who being portrayed who is being honored--Jesus Christ, Mary,
angels, the Saints, and so on. The honor paid to a sacred image is
a respectful veneration and is not the adoration due to God alone.
These images are used to lead Catholics to God incarnate. We do
not stop at the image, but at the God who is responsible for it
all. It is in God we place our trust. |
