Campaign 2000
When we elect our lawmakers in America, we
influence the moral character of this nation for better or for worse. When our laws permit violence against little
babies, incidents like the Columbine High School shootings are the logical outcome

Abortion Becomes An Issue in Virgina Senate
Race
|
|
Richmond, VA -- Abortion may have taken a back seat to
education and taxes in the Virginia Senate campaign, but the Democratic and Republican
candidates offer starkly different positions on the divisive issue.
Pro-abortion Democratic Sen. Charles S. Robb consistently votes for taxpayer funding
abortions through Medicaid and has consistently voted pro-abortion, including opposing a
ban on partial-birth abortions. He also voted against a bill that would have prohibited
minors from secretly being transported across state lines to avoid parental-notification
requirements.
Republican challenger George F. Allen is a staunch opponent of taxpayer-funded abortions.
He voted pro-life during his single term in Congress, and as Virginia's governor he signed
into law a strong parental notification bill.
Robb claims as his guiding light the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that
legalized unliumited abortions indicating he would "continue to fight" to keep
abortion legal.
In a recent debate, Allen said he would favor overturning the Roe v. Wade decision and
noted that states have a direct interest in protecting unborn children.
Robb said he has voted against bans on partial-birth abortion because they lacked a
so-called "health" exception. Such an exception, pro-life leaders note, would
allow virtually all partial-birth abortions to remain legal.
Those votes have prompted Allen to accuse the senator of not being sincere in his
opposition to partial-birth abortion.
"No matter what statements you might have in the Congressional Record, Chuck, the
reality is when the vote is called, you vote wrong and you keep partial-birth abortion
alive," Allen said.
Each candidate has the backing of advocates on either end of the issue as well -- Robb
earns a perfect grade from the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League and
Allen has been endorsed by the Virginia Society for Human Life, Virginia's leading
pro-life organization.
In Virginia, polls show support for prohibiting partial-birth abortions, for parental
notification for minors and for a waiting period between the time a woman seeks and has an
abortion. |
